UPDATE: As a sudden twist of fate, it looks like Panini will continue to keep honoring Expired redemptions, as long as they still have the card. If they don't, your redemption will be replaced with Panini Points. The number of Points will be determined by Panini.
This is a welcomed piece of news for collectors after it appeared Panini were putting a stop to their very generous redemption program after all these years. When Panini was in the hockey card game, the results and opinions from the collecting community are still debated to date, but like 'em or hate 'em, I think we all should appreciate what Panini brought into our little corner of the hobby when it comes to the hockey card market, some of which we can still see today. One of the best examples I can current think of is the Panini Prime Ties set. This set once again pushed the boundaries on what memorabilia pieces "could" and "could not" be featured on a card, while stepping up and making it a beautiful card in the process. While this 13-14 Panini Prime product was a means to the end for Panini's time in hockey, this set moved the hobby forwards, which is always a good thing in my books. So why write a post about a 6-year-old card set created by a company no longer involved with the sport? In a recent Hobby Insider thread, I was once again pleasantly reminded just how cool these cards really are and I'm thrilled to be able to own on of these unique memorabilia cards in my collection. Like an unfortunate reflection in Panini's time in this hobby, this subset is either well liked or extremely hated by some members in the collecting community, which is totally fine, as we are all able to make our own opinions on companies, products, and of course the individual cards themselves. I received this card from a huge Buffalo Sabres collector a few years ago and it's probably still one of my favourite cards in my collection due to the unique style of it. As I'm primarily a 'binder guy' when it comes to storing and viewing my collection (yes, even the 1/1's *gasps*), I don't see this card as often as I'd like to due to the physical size of this card being so massive, so it needs to be relegated into a storage box. I'm hopeful that one day I can display it alongside some other unique pieces within my hobby space once I figure out a layout. It's definitely one of those 'stop yourself in your tracks' kind of cards, especially for those not familiar with the hobby or who have been absent for sometime. When it comes to my own player collection, there is another Jhonas Enroth Prime Ties card inserted in 2011-12 Panini Prime, which uses the jersey ties from the amazing Buffalo Sabres' 40th Anniversary jersey. I've seen a picture of it, but I haven't seen it come up for sale yet (I'll post a picture of it below). So what's your opinion on these Panini Prime Ties cards (Or the 15-16 Upper Deck version in UD Black - Black Tie Affair)? Do you like these cards or hate them? Do you own any of these types of cards in your collection? Please leave a comment below to share your thoughts. It's not often I found out about an older card that I have never heard of, but a little while ago I was introduced to an error card that I had no previous knowledge of.
2007-08 SHL Elitset The Guardians - Red (Ruby) Error Variation These cards were pulled from the products prior to the release date, as these were not like the other parallels in the set. The original cards in this insert set has a blue/greenish shine to it to go along with the Silver parallels /35, but mistakenly shoved into the mix were these Red parallels that are also mistakenly numbered /35 on the back, but have no hand-numbered serial number like the Silver versions. My guess is that they originally planned to release uber-rare Red (Ruby) variations, but the backs were all printed wrong (the backs look identical to the Silver Versions and have "/35" on the back, even though they are much rarer), so they had to disregard the Red parallels from the checklist and pull them from the product. From the information I've received, there is less than 20 of these cards in total and there is an Enroth out there.... somewhere. So while it's a shot in the dark at this point in the game (13 years later), I hope that I can track down one of these Red Error variations one of these years. Thanks to Andreas on Hobby Insider for bringing these to my attention a while ago. He owned the Joel Gistedt The Guardians Red Parallel shown above and he's seen a few others in Sweden as well. If anyone see's the Enroth Red Parallel of the card below... Please let me know. :) How To Get Your Player Collection on The Map? Make Yourself a Collector Who's Easy to Find12/17/2019 The one that got away... This Enroth 13-14 Panini Select 1/1 gets snatched up in a flash.11/26/2019 There are those cards that you seem to win with ease, then there are the ones that get away. That's the cruel nature of this hobby sometimes and it's something that all collectors will go through. It's just the way it is.
I usually share cards that I win or trade for, but these are one of those rare times when I didn't win or lose a bidding war for a card, I simply lost out on the oppourtunity to throw my hat into the ring. As the story usually goes, I was surfing eBay the other night and for some reason I felt the urge to check the recently sold items page. And there it was. Gone in a blink of an eye it seems after someone's Best Offer was accepted, I had just stumbled upon the recent sold listing for this Jhonas Enroth 2013-14 Panini Select Black Tag Auto 1/1 card that I needed to complete this particular 2013-14 Panini Select rainbow (The Sold listing can be viewed Here). I'd like to say I was crushed, but these are just hockey cards after all, so I feel like disappointment would be more accurate. I wanted this one for my collection real bad, but I guess it was just not meant to be. I sent a message to the seller, but I don't expect to hear anything back. Maybe one day I'll have a second shot at this 1/1, but I'm not holding my breath. I know there are some other Enroth collectors out there, so If any of you (maybe if you're the person who ended up with this sweet card) are reading this blog post, I want to send you a big congratulations your way for adding this great card to your collection. It's times like these where I focus on the cards I've managed to add to my collection so far to soften the blow of losing out on a big card. It makes me appreciate what I have and not dwell on the stuff I don't have. These lessons are good to follow in any hobby, but also in life. These smaller moments of practice are great for teaching ourselves this valuable life lesson I think. If you happen to see this card in your card collecting travels, please let me know. Thanks! Anyways, if you've made it this far, I have to thank you. Nothing like a little hobby talk to brighten up your Tuesday, yeah? - Crease UPDATE: This card has been found! I managed to finally add this card into my collection with the help of a very generous hobby friend. You can read all about it in my recent blog post: What Once Was Lost Has Now Been Found
Will this year be the year of the BuyBack? Apparently so. Let's dive a little deeper into this, shall we?
In my last blog post, I learned that me and my collection were in Beckett Hockey's November issue as their featured Super Collector. As stoked as I was, I haven't actually seen the article yet - until today that is. My November Issue finally made its way into my hands today and I'm excited to show it off.
For those who own their November issues already, you can find my 2-page spread on pages 24 and 25. Awesome, right? For those who don't have access to a hard copy of their own, I've scanned the article so others can view it here on my personal blog. I hope you enjoy! Have you picked up this month's Novemeber Issue of Beckett Hockey? If not, I suggest you do... because I am the featured Super Collector in this issue! Take a look at my featured article when you have the chance!
So I stumbled upon this tweet from Panini America's Twitter Page earlier today and I don't know what to think of it.
I thought Panini was done with hockey? Well, apparently not. When the news hit that Panini had managed to sign Kaapo Kakko to an trading card autograph exclusive, I knew that Panini would be showcasing his cards this upcoming season, but I (and many others) assumed his autographed cards would be spread out in a multi-sport release of somesort, since Panini hasn't has a full-fledged hockey release since the unlicensed sticker/memorabilia dump that was 2015-16 Panini Anthology. I haven't seen any images of the product yet, so I can't comment on how this product will look, but no doubt they'll be some rookie-year Kakko autographs thrown into the mix, as it will be the main driving force of this Score Hockey product. But what else is there? Does Panini still have a decent inventory of hockey autographs to pull from? Only time will tell. Definitely going to be an interesting product to follow for sure. As most of you have heard already, Upper Deck has once again partnered with Tim Hortons to offer hockey cards at all Canadian locations. This promotion started today (September 23rd) and will be avialible while supplies last at your local Tim Hortons locations.
You can view the full 2019-20 Upper Deck Tim Hortons Hockey Cards checklist here. I really love these over the counter offerings and I feel like releases like these do a lot in order to bring in the younger generation into this great hobby of ours. It's cheap, fun and affordable. What's not to like about that? I remember the UD McDonalds hockey cards when I was a kid and I still own them all today. It was very fun to rip open those packs and some of those hobby memories will stay with me forever. This Tim Hortons release features a lot of high-profile players that will no doubt have a lot of youngers kids (and adults, lets face it) trading cards over coffee to complete their sets. Enjoy ripping open those packs, everyone. I know I sure will! P.S. And for those wondering, here's what my two packs this morning yielded me: |
