Is this the Holy Grail of modern hockey cards? It very well could be.
Early last week, I was notified of THE 15-16 Connor McDavid Cup Rookie Patch Auto, which is numbered 97 (McDavid's Jersey Number) out of 99 total copies in currently for sale. The card is also Graded PSA 9 Mint. A beyond impressive card, to say the least. Eric and I recently spoke about this legendary card on our recent episode of the Center Ice Hockey Card Podcast (which is also available on Apple, Spotify, Google, etc). This card is currently on Leland's auction site with a current bid of $52,797 USD with over 11 days left in the auction. Any guesses to how much this McDavid card might sell for when it's all said and done? Author's Note: This McDavid RPA Sold for a final price of $135,811.20 USD. This does not include the 20% buyers premium. After my recent How To Start a Hockey Card Collection blog post received a lot of great feedback, I wanted to dive a little deeper and branch these Hobby How To posts into a series of blog posts for young and/or experienced collectors alike in order to help navigate the landscape that is collecting cards as a hobby. Let's dive into Part Two: How To Start A Player Collection I'm going to highlight a few points below that I've learned over my years collecting on how to start a Player Collection. These are a collection of tips (pun totally intended) that I wish I'd been told when I was first starting out in this hobby over 15 years ago and continue to learn from today. Part ll of this blog series, How To Start A Hockey Card Collection: Player Collecting is now Live. Ahhh, hockey cards. Some people may not understand them, but for those who do or are just starting to, this blog post is definitely for you.
Whether you've been collecting for decades, or collecting for mere minutes, we've all been there. Starting your hockey card collection is the first step to participating in a hobby that has brought me many awesome memories over the years. But where do you start? That is the question I'm going to try and tackle today. Below I'll outline some tips that beginner or experienced hobbyists can use as a guide to start their new collections off on the right foot and have some fun along the way:
UPDATE: As a sudden twist of fate, it looks like Panini will continue to keep honoring Expired redemptions, as long as they still have the card. If they don't, your redemption will be replaced with Panini Points. The number of Points will be determined by Panini.
This is a welcomed piece of news for collectors after it appeared Panini were putting a stop to their very generous redemption program after all these years. Beckett update: Panini To Continue Honoring Expired Redemptions Panini's New Customer Service Platform: First Wave of Upgrades Made to Panini America’s New Customer Service Platform When Panini was in the hockey card game, the results and opinions from the collecting community are still debated to date, but like 'em or hate 'em, I think we all should appreciate what Panini brought into our little corner of the hobby when it comes to the hockey card market, some of which we can still see today. One of the best examples I can current think of is the Panini Prime Ties set. This set once again pushed the boundaries on what memorabilia pieces "could" and "could not" be featured on a card, while stepping up and making it a beautiful card in the process. While this 13-14 Panini Prime product was a means to the end for Panini's time in hockey, this set moved the hobby forwards, which is always a good thing in my books. So why write a post about a 6-year-old card set created by a company no longer involved with the sport? In a recent Hobby Insider thread, I was once again pleasantly reminded just how cool these cards really are and I'm thrilled to be able to own on of these unique memorabilia cards in my collection. Like an unfortunate reflection in Panini's time in this hobby, this subset is either well liked or extremely hated by some members in the collecting community, which is totally fine, as we are all able to make our own opinions on companies, products, and of course the individual cards themselves. I received this card from a huge Buffalo Sabres collector a few years ago and it's probably still one of my favourite cards in my collection due to the unique style of it. As I'm primarily a 'binder guy' when it comes to storing and viewing my collection (yes, even the 1/1's *gasps*), I don't see this card as often as I'd like to due to the physical size of this card being so massive, so it needs to be relegated into a storage box. I'm hopeful that one day I can display it alongside some other unique pieces within my hobby space once I figure out a layout. It's definitely one of those 'stop yourself in your tracks' kind of cards, especially for those not familiar with the hobby or who have been absent for sometime. When it comes to my own player collection, there is another Jhonas Enroth Prime Ties card inserted in 2011-12 Panini Prime, which uses the jersey ties from the amazing Buffalo Sabres' 40th Anniversary jersey. I've seen a picture of it, but I haven't seen it come up for sale yet (I'll post a picture of it below). So what's your opinion on these Panini Prime Ties cards (Or the 15-16 Upper Deck version in UD Black - Black Tie Affair)? Do you like these cards or hate them? Do you own any of these types of cards in your collection? Make Yourself a Collector Who's Easy to Find12/17/2019 The one that got away... This Enroth 13-14 Panini Select 1/1 gets snatched up in a flash.11/26/2019 There are those cards that you seem to win with ease, then there are the ones that get away. That's the cruel nature of this hobby sometimes and it's something that all collectors will go through. It's just the way it is.
I usually share cards that I win or trade for, but these are one of those rare times when I didn't win or lose a bidding war for a card, I simply lost out on the oppourtunity to throw my hat into the ring. As the story usually goes, I was surfing eBay the other night and for some reason I felt the urge to check the recently sold items page. And there it was. Gone in a blink of an eye it seems after someone's Best Offer was accepted, I had just stumbled upon the recent sold listing for this Jhonas Enroth 2013-14 Panini Select Black Tag Auto 1/1 card that I needed to complete this particular 2013-14 Panini Select rainbow (The Sold listing can be viewed Here). I'd like to say I was crushed, but these are just hockey cards after all, so I feel like disappointment would be more accurate. I wanted this one for my collection real bad, but I guess it was just not meant to be. I sent a message to the seller, but I don't expect to hear anything back. Maybe one day I'll have a second shot at this 1/1, but I'm not holding my breath. I know there are some other Enroth collectors out there, so If any of you (maybe if you're the person who ended up with this sweet card) are reading this blog post, I want to send you a big congratulations your way for adding this great card to your collection. It's times like these where I focus on the cards I've managed to add to my collection so far to soften the blow of losing out on a big card. It makes me appreciate what I have and not dwell on the stuff I don't have. These lessons are good to follow in any hobby, but also in life. These smaller moments of practice are great for teaching ourselves this valuable life lesson I think. If you happen to see this card in your card collecting travels, please let me know. Thanks! Anyways, if you've made it this far, I have to thank you. Nothing like a little hobby talk to brighten up your Tuesday, yeah? - Crease UPDATE: This card has been found! I managed to finally add this card into my collection with the help of a very generous hobby friend. You can read all about it in my recent blog post: What Once Was Lost Has Now Been Found |
