01-02 SP Game Used SP Patch Card Autograph 2/50 - Martin BrodeurAre you ready for another Card Of The Week post? Don't worry, I got your back this week with this recent HHOF goaltender... You may have heard of him... For my second installment of this Card Of The Week section of my blog, I figured I would show off my first ever 'big' card purchase when I was younger. You see, I have always loved hockey cards, but up until this point I had only dabbled in opening card packs from the variety stores, and I was really new to buying on eBay at the time. It was my first look into the crazy amount of cards that could be had with just a few simple clicks (funds permitting, of course).
Seeing as this next purchase would have been my last purchase for quite sometime at that stage, I knew the card had to be perfect. If I was going to spend my entire budget on a single card, It was going to be a card I could keep in my collection for a long, long time. I had already decided that it was going to be Martin Brodeur, but the card selection from what I saw availible took a little more time. I forget how many days I searched, but when I saw this older card from 01-02 SP Game Used by Upper Deck, I was completely sold on this card. I'm not going to divulge what I paid for this card, but I will say that I have had no regrets since that day it arrived in the mail. To this day it was probably the most nerve-wracking experience I've had waiting for the card to arrive safely. But once it did, I couldn't stop looking at it. The card designs were great from that year, as it almost looks like the card was purposely split into 3 sections: One for the auto, photography, and the memorabilia portion, then sandwhiched togather. That, coupled with the nice card colours really bring this card home for me. It's not the most limited Brodeur card out on the secondary market, but a card being numbered /50 in 2001-2002 was a pretty big deal back then, and while it may not be a big deal today, I still think some of those older cards still hold their scarcity from around 17 years ago. There is a collector on SCF/HI named Johnse27 who completes a bunch of sets, and 01-02 SPGU was one of them, and man are they ever some gorgeous cards. This card still remains one of the top cards in my Martin Brodeur PC, and it will sit at the top for a very long time. What card sits on top in your own personal collections? I'd love to hear about them! Please leave a comment below or reach out to me via my Contact Page.
