1911-1912 C55 Imperial Tobacco #16 Percy LeSueur What a week this had been in the hockey card world for me. After receiving 2 more cards for my collection this week, I also received my first ever prewar card for my card collection as well!
Pictured above is my 1911-12 C55 Imperial Tobacco #16 Percy LeSueur, which received a grade of 3 (Very Good) by the SGC Grading company. Aside from fitting perfectly into my newly created vintage goalie card collection, this card, historically speaking, tells a few stories of it's own. From the way the game and the goaltending position was played, the teams and players that predate the NHL, even down to the way these cards were carefully manufactered and distibuted inside packs of cigarettes, this card speaks volumes about a totally different time in the world, acting as a cardboard time machine. While this is one of the very first hockey card sets ever produced, it also doubles as a historical artifact that I am now thankful to own in my humble collection of mine. These past couple months have led me to seriously look into vintage cards. Once I made the decision to start picking up a few vintage goalie cards, picking up a card from the iconic C55 set was at the top of my list, along with Percy LeSueur. Aside from being on of the top goalies in the NHA at the time and being the only goalie to play for the Stanley Cup twice in the same year, along with being the first ever All-Star Game goaltender, LeSueur's contributions to the goaltending position and the sport at large just fascinated me to no end. The card itself has terrific eye appeal. The colours and the card just pop and the back is fully intact with no paper loss (a common theme amongst these cards, since some were glued into albums). While this card only graded a 3 by SGC, I am still very happy with the card and the price I ended up payingfor it. This card will be permanentally staying in my collection and will be appreciated for many more years to come. Happy Collecting, - Aaron
